Realisation through Knowledge
(The Second Chapter of Bhagavad Geeta)
This chapter entitled Sankhya-yoga, the seeker gets an exhaustive summary, as it were, of the whole philosophical content of the Geeta. From stanzas 55 to 60, it has an exhaustive, though hasty, sketch of the yoga of action as adumbrated in the entire Geeta. From stanzas 61 to 70, the path of love (Bhakti-yoga), has been indicated and in 71 and 72, the path of renunciation (Sannyasa-yoga), has been slightly suggested. Thus, the second chapter of the Geeta can be taken as an epitome of the entire Geeta. In the Geeta all the Known paths to perfection sketched out in the Vedas namely, jnana, bhakti and karma, by which realization of the Upanishads is reached when one has fully purified oneself by the pursuit of ritualism, karma-kanda and has spent a period of time in living the upasana-kanda. All these are explained in the Geeta and much more – the synthesis of them all, as individual in the body of Geeta – Chapter 2.
Lord Sri Krishna points out those characteristic attitudes in a Realised saint, which are attainable by all through right efforts and which constitute the means.
These 18 verses (Sthitaprajna Lakshna) give the complete and exhaustive exposition of the inner experience and the outer conduct of a Man of Steady Wisdom. By narrating the inner and outer life of a Man of Self realization, Geeta helps us to detect for ourselves the right type of Masters from the charlatans. Apart from this, these verses have a direct appeal to all sincere sadhakas inasmuch as this section give to them an easy thumb rule as to what type of values and mental attitudes one should develop during their practice, in order to realize the ever effulgent divinity within them, in other words, the pure Awareness.
A Man of Steady Wisdom is one who has accomplished this feat and experienced the Self. Therefore, a Man of Steady Wisdom is one who has reached beyond the veil of ignorance without any trace of ignorance
The Man of Steady Wisdom, self-satisfied in the Self, can no more entertain any desire or have any appetite for the paltry objects of the body, of the mind or of the intellect. He becomes the very source of all Bliss
